江戸時代の昔から、相手に敬意を表す手紙文に句読点を打つことは、タブーとされていました。文章を読み易くするために句読点を打つことは、相手に対して「教養が無い人」と思っているという事になり、失礼にあたると考えられていたのです。今は句読点を打つことは一般的になっているので、ピンと来ないかも知れませんが、現代に例えていうと「簡単な漢字にまで全部振り仮名を振っている文章」を貰うことをイメージしてみて下さい。
